The beginning of this problem is that I was at work and the boys were at daycare instead of us all being at the Friday Play Date. I got a call almost immediately after my 1 hour meeting was over and it was Creme. Tanner had chewed on a capsule, but they managed to get the shell of it out of his mouth. I'm sorry...what?!?!?!? What kind of capsule? Where did he find it? Do you really think he ate whatever it was? I packed my computer and then headed out the door toward the school.
On the way to my car, my phone rang again...Creme. The head director told me that she tried to call a few minutes before and couldn't get me. The only explanation is that I must have been in the elevator. She said that she called Poison Control and because of his size they recommended that his vitals be monitored. So, the EMTs were on the way! I got to Creme within 5 minutes, and an ambulance and fire truck were there...how scary! They had already examined him and he was fine so far.
They wanted to take him to Texas Children's, but he was acting completely normal. So normal that he was destroying Ms. Brenda's office. So, I asked if he would be seen any quicker if he went by ambulance..."NO." I called the pediatrician and she said that I could just watch him at home. It was a clear capsule so she felt like it was vitamins or herbs. Instead of me monitoring, I decided to make an appointment a little later so that the doctor could look him over. He was completely OK. I also felt better to see an oily residue on the envelope in which they placed the capsule remnants. I showed this to the pediatrician and she agreed that it was probably vitamin E or fish oil. Crisis averted.
Tanner found the pill in the hallway after the kindergarten graduation ceremony. They think it must have been in a visitor's purse or pocket, because the teachers keep their belongings in the front of the school. I was overall impressed with the way Creme handled the situation, and I have to give much credit to Ms. Brenda who was completely calm and so great to keep Tanner occupied with her computer as I used her phone to call the doctor while the EMTs stood in her office. I suppose this is why we are paying the big bucks for daycare downtown. Tanner is making them earn it!!!!

TMI...Potty Training Saga
If you don't want to hear a potty training update, skip this post. It is graphic in nature.
Brady's pediatrician thinks it's time for us to see a psychiatrist about his potty training issues. (For those that don't know, Brady asks for a pullup to poop in. He will not under any circumstance go poop at school because he won't ask for a pullup there.) We have been waiting for Brady's pediatrician's psych referral group to contact me for an appointment time. We submitted the paperwork on April 28th. Finally, the woman called on Tuesday with a July 7th initial consultation. I was shocked. I then called a couple of other doctors...none of which I have heard from.
Today at the pediatrician (unrelated matter) I asked if that was typical. She said that she thought it was reasonable. We did not see Brady's usual doctor today, but instead we saw one of her associates. She asked if the problem cropped up overnight, knowing that it did not. She then informed me that I shouldn't expect a solution overnight (which I do not). She also told me that it wasn't Brady's problem but it was training the parents how to deal with it. It's hard not to take that personally, since I'm the one that has done the potty training. Of course, Brady is hearing all of this. I told her that we want to start something different to help him with this because Dr. Wilking said not to do anything else about it until under advice from the psychiatrist.
Fast forward to tonight...we were at Chick-fil-a and Brady asked me to put on a pullup for him. I told him (calmly, again...I think there might be something to this calm and unemotional thing, if one can maintain composure to do it) that I didn't have a pullup so he either could go on the potty or we would have to leave his friends and the grand opening celebration. We went to the restroom where I fully expected him to do as he always does in this circumstance which is to sit for a couple of minutes and then say that he doesn't have to go anymore.) But, this time he sat and pooped! Both of us were so happy. He asked for gum, which I gave him. We then went to Target and bought the $50 talking Buzz Lightyear that I promised months ago if he would only poop ANYWHERE but a pullup.
I have no idea what made this night any different from the others. Maybe it was hearing the other doctor talk, or maybe he really wanted to stay and play so he just decided to do it. I don't know. This is probably only his 4th success in his entire life. ALL other successes were very emotionally draining because they involved me convincing him to stay for a few more minutes when he is crying and wailing to get off of the potty. I am trying not to get my hopes up, but I am so wanting this to be something that repeats itself tomorrow (and maybe even the next day and the next day.)

Music Disclaimer and a Lazy Weekend
I have to put a disclaimer on the music. I love the music on Benjamin & Timothy's Mommy's webpage, but I didn't have the patience to figure out how to do it. So, Tim took charge and edited this portion of the blog for me. His music selection is what he thinks belongs on a blog, or what reminds him of the boys. I have to say that Brady's favorite song...Hannah Montana's, "Party in the USA" didn't make his list, though! Why not, Honey?
This week seemed really long to all of us. The highlights were Jordan's Spring Football game on Wednesday and a weekend absolutely no plans. Brady, Tanner and I went to the football game and the weather was really nice. The weird scrimmage scoring meant that no one in our little threesome knew what was going on or if Jordan was "winning." The team looked fine, the cheerleaders were great, and we were not subjected to an HCHS drill team performance. A good scrimmage all around.
Tim finally returned from his weekly travels around 11 PM on Friday. His week consisted of travel with weather challenges, late nights with St. Rob on the East Coast, a return to Houston where he stayed about 12 hours only to pick up a jacket for a sales pitch the next day, then a return flight with weather, deplaning, circling Houston, arriving to find no cabs at the airport and an unsympathetic wife that was unwilling to load a sleeping teenager, 4-year old and 2-year old to take a trip to the airport to retrieve him. No end in sight to his travels at least 3 nights a week. And, Tim loves this job.
We didn't do much at all this weekend, and the rain in Houston made this an easy decision. We made a football cake in honor of Jordan's spring game for the weekly dinner with Uncle Grant, Kenzie and Mom on Friday. Some shopping and a trip to the library on Saturday and church followed by Dad's and Pam's house today. Tanner took a spill off of the couch onto the hardwoods. His head hit the floor very hard and he cried for some time, which is most unlike Tanner. So, I will be waking him every four hours tonight and tomorrow. He acts fine, but we are troubled by the lack of swelling. Poor Tann!
Did I mention that every waking moment has to be spent playing baseball? I never thought that I'd say this, but I can't wait for football season!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mothers Day Weekend
Saturday, Brady, Tanner and I went to a play at the AD Players Children's Theatre, courtesy of Darrell at my work. I debated long and hard before I decided to take Tanner. Darrell assured me that everyone had kids, it's a small theater, and the seats are close enough to the door to make a quick getaway if necessary. So, the three of us went.
The boys were so still and engaged. Neither said a word except to occasionally ask, "Why are they doing that, Mommy?" or "Who is that guy?" The play was called "Alice, Now!" and is an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Afterwards, the boys were able to have the cast sign a postcard of the cast photo and they could ask questions of the actors. Tanner would go up to each actor and hand them the postcard where Brady is too shy to do that.
After naps, we went to Kenzie's mom's house for a swim. Uncle Grant and Kenzie were nice enough to stay in the cold pool so that the boys could kick around on the steps for a couple of hours. A note on swimming for those that don't know...both boys had a two-week every day session last summer and that went pretty well. Then, we went to once a week. Brady never warmed up to the lessons again. All winter, he has been reminding me NOT to sign him up for swim lessons. So, both boys are starting weekly lessons again on May 29th. This will be traumatic for Brades. After swimming, we went to dinner with Pops. This went much better than the dinner with Uncle Grant's pants earlier in the weekend.
On Mother's Day, Brady and Grandma went with Uncle Grant to the Astros game again. This time, Grant made the mistake of promising that they could stay the entire game. When the game went into extra innings, Grant asked if he had seen enough. Brady reminded Grant that he promised to stay the entire game. So, 11 innings later they came back home in time for Grant to cook steaks. My contribution to the meal was baked potatoes and green beans from HEB. But, I did make homemade bacon bits...and you people say that I can't cook???
Brady is completely out of control with baseball. We have to be either outside letting him hit off of the tee and run around the bases, or we have to be inside with the squishy ball and bat where I have to be the pitcher and the fans at the same time. This is a challenge because it requires me to sit on our stairs and remain seated until it's time to cheer while I pitch the ball.
He also remembers everything about the Astros games. Days after the Mothers Day game, he told me, "Mommy, some of the baseball players spit brown and some of them spit white. Do the Astros spit brown, or are they the team that spits white?" I responded that I didn't know. At what age does one explain smokeless tobacco?

The first week of May
This is part of my catching up...Tuesday was Brady's end-of-year gymnastics performance. He has been taking what they call "Tuesday's Tumblers" at his school for the past few months. Brady was so excited to perform. He told me that morning, "Mommy, if you have anything to talk to me about, you have to wait until after the performance. You will just have to wait." Here are some of the pictures.

I didn't post all of the events, but the performance consisted of stretching, an obstacle course, balance beam, vault, parallel bars and single bar. Brady is proud of his trophy which is complete with his name!

MAY!?!?!?
I can't believe it's already May. I have some catching up to do, but I am going to try a different way this time. I am going to start with today and then work backwards. Another thing is that I really wish I would have journaled during my pregnancies, so as I remember things that I enjoyed (or didn't enjoy) when the boys were younger, I am going to post those feelings while I still remember (if I can conjure any of these up as I go through the rest of life here on the blog.)
Tim has been in Dallas a good bit of this week, but he's back as of this evening. We have been busy with house stuff (more business than pleasure, so I'll blog about that if I have time later.) I have not had a Thursday off in quite a few weeks now. Yesterday, I was in continuing education and then I went to the Astros game with some coworkers. Even though we lost, the seats were great (behind home plate and the screen to keep fly balls off of my head) and the night could not have been better for having the roof open.
Today, we met friends at the mall. This week, it was Connor and his baby sister. The three boys played well together. If anything, Tanner was too aggressive with the older ones. Does that surprise anyone? Tanner also had a cookie with yellow icing. I wondered why people in the mall were stopping for a second look, until we stopped at some point and saw this...
The boys slept pretty well after the playdate. I saw Lauri (Connor's mom) had some good pictures of a previous playdate, so go to her blog from mine if you want to see some other shots of our Friday playdates.
After an hour nap, the boys and I went to the county public library and each boy checked out 3 library books. We'll see if we actually manage to return them and check out some more, or if we just bought six books that we don't really want. So far, we can find them all and they are still intact. We made a trip to Sam's, and I had to bribe the boys to suffer through the shopping with (what else?) more sweets- an Icee.
We made the mistake of going out to dinner with Mom, Uncle Grant and Kenzie after this fun, sugar-filled day. We went to a walk-up-and-order restaurant, but a restaurant nonetheless. We ordered, sat down and began to tell Brady a thousand times to sit down instead of bouncing on the booth between Kenzie and Uncle Grant. Finally, our food was ready...seafood.
Uncle Grant and Tim went to retrieve the food on trays and Grant started to unload them. After some hesitation by the onlookers (me and Mom) as to whose food was being unloaded onto the table, Brady began to bounce on the booth seat again. This bumped the tray of food and a bowl of crawfish bisque went entirely on Uncle Grant's pants and on the floor of the restaurant. Lucky for Brady, I didn't realize that his bouncing had caused this because it wasn't evident from my angle. Once everyone else clued me in to that fact, we had already taken some time to assess property damage and I was unemotional simply taking Brady outside for a time out. It was remarkably effective discipline, which I presume is the way discipline is supposed to be. We went back inside, he apologized to Uncle Grant, we moved his plate between Mom and me and we ate our dinner in relative peace. Let this be a lesson to me if (OK, when) future opportunities for discipline arise.

Brady Turns 4 (Pump it Up Party)
Brady has had a birth-month rather than a birth-day!

We celebrated at Pump it Up (an inflatable slide and bouncy-things)with Benjamin and Connor who also turned 4. This was a celebration with the Creme friends. It's really easy to see how much he has grown up in just a year when I compare his actions at the birthdays this year with last.
Brady had no time for us at all because he was so busy with his friends. All of the kids had a great time, and so did the parents. It was Disneys Cars theme, and we had Treebeards yellow cake with chocolate icing. And here are some action photos of Tim, the Boys and the last one is Tanner and Timothy (Benjamin's brother...same age as Tanner) playing video games.

Zoobilee
Turns out that being a zoo member is not exclusive AT ALL. The zoo was more crowded than I have ever seen it. Of course, this might be because we avoid high traffic times of spring break, etc. and we tend to go very early or very late. Anyway, we were there with the rest of the zoo members (most of the city, apparently.) They gave us a passport for each boy, and we had to go to various animals from different continents. After we looked at the animal, they would stamp the passport. After collecting all of the stamps on the passport, you get a prize. The second picture is the boys claiming their prizes.
The zoo plays music by the reflection pond and kids in animal costumes dance around. You can see some of the "animals" below. Tanner didn't think this was right, at all. He would not get close to them. We met up with Laura, her mom, and her friend Terri for an hour or so. We watched the giraffes eating leaves over our heads. We also saw the wild dogs and some smaller cat being fed. Since the event was late in the evening, the animals were all out. Also, there were more zoo-talks where the zookeepers discuss the animals and answer questions. That made dealing with the crowds worth it.

Today, we are having a lazy day at the house (and the boys are having a serious case of cabin fever) because the weather is not so great. It's again cooler and it's rainy.

Blue Bell and the Week
This week's activities consisted of a playdate with Brady's friend, Kate, at McDonalds one night after school. We also had class photos at school on Thursday. That worked out OK since I needed to work Thursday. It's time for quarter-end at work, so the next couple of weeks will be busy.
We went to the park by our house yesterday after work. The exciting development there is that Brady rode his scooter the entire way there AND BACK! Tanner rode his tricycle all the way there AND BACK! Major milestone for us! This was also a reminder of how much I love the immediate area in which we live.
Today, Brady, Tanner and I went to the Bluebell Creamery in Brenham. It was such nice weather again. We toured the Creamery, but I don't think the boys got much out of it. After the tour, we were able to chose a scoop from a pretty good selection of their ice cream. I don't think my favorite, Rocky Road, is anyone else's favorite because it wasn't on the list. The boys were able to find many flavors, but they were also able to narrow it down to a single selection when the time came to tell our tour guide what they wanted!

Tonight, the three of us are going to Zoobilee at the zoo. We are not sure what this is, but it is part of our zoo membership so we are going! Look for the report on that later this weekend.

Easter 2010
The boys had so many Easter Celebrations this year, and they loved every minute of it! First with Glenda & Billy, Penny, Creme, home, Grandma's church Kenzie & Uncle Grant and then Grandma.
They both understood how to hunt eggs and Brady understands the real meaning of Easter. When mom asked if he knew why we celebrate Easter, Brady's response was "Jesus died on the cross." We worked on it a little more when we read the Easter story each night of Holy Week. I asked Brady on Sunday, the last day that we were to read the story, where Jesus was. He replied, "Hiding behind the big rock." So, he didn't quite get the resurrection part, but maybe next year.
The Easter bunny brought Mary Poppins and The Wiggles to the boys so they spent some of the morning watching those shows. Good thing, since they were up at 5:30 that morning!

This will be the last Easter at Mom's church (which is the church in which I grew up, was baptized, was married, etc.) The congregation is merging with another congregation in town and Mom's church property will be sold. Here is a picture in the rose garden at the church because it will likely be demolished at some future point in the not-so-distant future.

Last catch-up post
In addition to all of the Easter parties, the boys and I have been hanging out at the park because the weather has been incredible. I attempt to run and then we go to the playground for some (different than our backyard) slides and swings. Brady tries to keep me on track by asking, "Why are you walking, now, Mommy? Go faster." I have to breathe, Brady.
One night, we ate at Becks by the golf course. I try to get the boys interested in golf, but Tanner is so loud when observing, "OHHHHH, Mommy did you see him hit that ball??" They both know that the sand is a bad thing and the jog path is right beside one of the sand traps. The boys (either or both) make (loud) commentary, "Look at that guy! He's in the sand!" This time Brady asked loudly, "Why did he hit it again in the sand?" How do I respond? I thought about "Brady, he really isn't a good golfer." But instead I just said, "Silly golfer." We might be asked to stay away from the golf course.
Tim attended a college night at Jordan's school. While so many of the things have changed, the tasks on the agenda for the next year seem to be the same old. Visit schools and take tours. Look at schools that are dream schools but also look at some back-up plan schools. Can anyone say my Alma Matter? Seems like we are going to be touring colleges for Jordan at the same time that we are touring elementary schools for the little ones. How did this happen?
Finally, a current post. We went to the mall today to play with Benjamin, Connor and Timothy. We are planning a joint birthday party for May 1 for Benjamin, Connor and Brady. Details to follow.

Teeth
Tanner went to his first dentist appointment yesterday. He was such a big boy! He did everything they wanted him to do perfectly. I have been concerned about his lower canine teeth (don't care to research the proper terminology). They have brownish-yellow marks near the gum line. See if you can spot the problem in the picture below.

This is the result of some trauma that he experienced as these teeth came through the gum. I can't remember anything really scary that was going on. The dentist suggested that he many have ran a high fever. Anyway, these teeth will be more susceptible to cavities and we are going to attempt to restore the enamel with some fluoride gel to apply each night. Poor Tann! But, it could have been much worse.
On a selfish note, I also went to the periodontist (at the recommendation of my regular dentist) yesterday. My dentist said that I would lose all of my teeth by the age of 50 because I have bone deterioration. After a very stressful 20 minutes of the periodontist calling out statistical numbers as he prodded each tooth and the gums surrounding it, he determined that I have thin gums and I need to do everything I can to preserve what I have. He also said that he would not let me lose teeth. There are some other options that we can do if the condition worsens like the o-so-pleasant-sounding gum grafts. At least there are options!
So, overall, pretty good news from the dentists' offices for Mommy and Tanner!

Easter Parties at Creme
Of course, these parties never happen on the days that I am off. Instead, they were on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons at the convenient time of 4 pm. This is part of my blog-posting delay as I find myself having to catch up on work e-mails after the boys are in bed, instead of blogging.
Both parties were a success. Tanner and Brady both were on the Easter bunny's lap. I wonder if they could sense that it was Ms. Nikita under the bunny suit? If anyone is expecting a formal Easter bunny picture, you might adjust expectations at this point. The line to see the mall bunny was at least 10 deep at 10 am this morning and the bunny didn't arrive until 11. By 1, the line was all the way down the mall. I guess there are other last-minute moms out there. So, these school pictures will be it for 2010. I do expect that they will distribute the individual bunny pics from the morning of the party later this month.
Tanner's party was Tuesday and his teacher really does some neat things. She made the bunny hats for the boys and you can see the little girl to the right of Tanner with the headdress that she made for each girl. The teachers also make bags for their candy. They provide all of the candy and the bunny, too.

Brady's party was Wednesday. They read stories for a while (the timing is critical at these parties, and we stall so that the bunny can be seen by one and all), had two separate snacks (one was a cookie and the other was a cupcake) and hunted candy in-between.

Springtime in Texas
At Uncle Grant's and Kenzie's house... there are bluebonnet (Texas' state flower) patches all along the bayou across the street from where they live. And some of the pictures were taken in the flowerbeds of their neighborhood.

The games they play with Uncle Grant include "chase me, Uncle Grant" and "let's play dodge ball, Uncle Grant." You can guess which one is happening here:

Finally, we had the swing set from Mawm and Pop (Christmas!!!!) assembled in our backyard! This is the perfect time of year to enjoy it.
